Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
