"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The sender also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile supporters have publicly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently depict them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Milestone

The trio have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics follow breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed resilience called for a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

However the sister act will always be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
